The Taborn Family

The earliest records start with a man named William Taborn Sr., a freeman of color, the son of William Taborn and Judey Allen. William Taborn was born in Northampton County, North Carolina, on the north side of the Roanoke River. Several records related to his pension as a Revolutionary war veteran are transcribed by Deloris Williams and can be found online via ncgenweb.

1. William Taborn (ca. 1730-1800), likely the son of Thomas Tabour and his wife Mary. William married Judey Allen. William and Judey are known to be the parents of William Taborn (sometimes called Sr.). They likely had other sons: Nathan, Allan, and Isaac and a daughter Elizabeth.

    2. William Taborn (Sr.) (ca. 1758-1835), son of William Taborn and Judey Allen. William married Nellie Evans January 1, 1778. William died February 4, 1835, according to documents related to his pension from the Revolutionary War. Research by Paul Heinegg (retrieved via Ancestry.com) shows that on 13 June 1754, William Taborn was one of fourteen heads of household who were sued in Southampton County court for failing to pay the discriminatory tax on free African American and Indian women. He pled not guilty at first but withdrew his plea and confessed when Francis Locust, James Brooks, James Brooks, Jr., John Byrd and John Byrd Jr., were found guilty [Orders 1749-54, 17, 501, 513; 1754-9, 25, 39-40; Judgment Papers 1752-7, frames 49, 54; 1752-5, frame 725]. He was recorded as living in Northampton County on 13 March 1770, when he and his wife, Judith, sold 100 acres in Brunswick County, Virginia, for £27. The deed specifies that the land fell to him by the death of his father, Thomas Taybor, and that it adjoined Fountain Creek and the North Carolina line [DB 9:596].
