The Thomas and Weary Families

We can only trace the Thomas family back a handful of generations, but the Weary family goes back further. The earliest known ancestor was Moore Weary, born in 1862 in Mississippi.

1. [?] Weary  (1862-?) married Sylvia Wilson. Some sites claim the father was called Moore Weary, and others claim he was called John Weary. Sadly the 1890 census is missing, so that we cannot verify the real name of the father of Moses Weary

  • George Wary (1889–) Twin brother of Moses
  • Moses Wearry (1889–1966) Twin brother of George.
  • Charlie Weary (1890–?)
  • 3 more siblings who died young

    2. Moses Weary (1887-1966), the son of a man with last name Weary and Sylvia Wilson.

In 1900 Moore Weary had died and Sylvia Wilson was left to raise 3 sons, including Moses. According to the census Moses had a twin brother called George.

1900 Census showing Moses (11) with his brothers and mother.

The next historical record is from 1917, when Moses has to register for the draft:

The World War I draft cart of Moses Weary, 28 years old, lists his date of birth as February 28, 1889. He is single at the time of registration and appears to be taking care of his mother. He is listed as medium build.

The 1920 census shows Moses living with his mother, Sylvia, and brother, Charlie. The census does mention that Moses was married at that time, but his wife is not listed in the household. The records mention that Sylvia Weary (born Wilson) had 6 children, but that only the two mentioned, Moses and Charlie, were still alive. This does mean that sometime in the previous decade Moses had lost his twin brother, George.

Moses married Ina Connerly on 20 December 1917 in Washington, LA, according to the Louisiana Compiled Marriage Index. Moses and Ina had six children:

    • Sandy Weary (1918–?)
    • Lucinda Werry (1919–?)
    • Ollie Weary (1920–?)
    • William Weary (1922–?)
    • Martha Weary (1924–?)
    • Rosa May Weary (1926–?)
    • Jay Weary (1935-?)
    • Percy Weary (1937-?)
In 1940 Ina Connerly has left her husband and has a new husband named Victor Conerly.
Ina’s eldest children, Rosa Mae and Ollie are listed as step-children, while the two youngest are listed as foster children.

In the 1940 census Ina Connerly (now 38 years old) appears as the wife of Victor Conerly (45 years old). Her children Ollie (20), Rosa Mae (13),Jay (5) and Percy (3) are listed as either stepchildren (the eldest two) or foster children (the youngest two) of Victor Connerly. It appears the marriage broke up in about 1936 or 1937. Note: Ina and Victor were not related, even though their last names are very similar (their grandparents are different men).

Moses Weary and Audrey Weary (born James) in the 1940 census.
They have 3 children: Noah (3), Georgia Lee (2), and Joseph (7 months).
The education level was recorded: Moses is said to have completed 3 grade, and Audrey completed 6th grade.

In the 1940 census Moses Weary is listed as married to Audrey James. Moses is 54 and Audrey is said to be 26 years old. There are 8 children from this second marriage:

    • Noah Wearry (1937)
    • Georgia L Weary (1938–2000)
    • Joseph Weary (1940)
    • Moses Weary Jr. (1941)
    • Merthe D Weary (1942)
    • John A Wearry (1946)
    • Angie Wearry (1947)
    • Mennie L Wearry (1949)
The Draft card for World War II lists his date of birth as February 8, 1888. His wife Audrey is listed as “Artery”. On the next page (not shown) Moses is said to be 5 foot 6 and 145 lbs, with a dark complexion.

    3. Merthe D Weary (1942), daughter of Moses Weary and Audrey James.

    4. Bobby Earl Thomas (1960-2009) Son of Merthe D Weary and Troy Thomas.

    5. Marleena Thomas (1994) Daughter of Bobby Earl Thomas and Clara Mae Braswell (see Braswell Family page for more information about the Braswells.)
